Stretch Therapy Course Course in London(UK)

Are you a personal trainer, physiotherapist, or massage therapist in UK looking to increase your knowledge of stretch therapy methods to bring it to your clients? You're in luck because Functional Stretch Therapy training courses are regularly being taught in the UK.

How do you become a stretch therapist?

Stretch classes in London
Only stretch classes, no personal stretch therapy sessions in UK?
In the UK, there's no course that explicitly gives a training course to provide stretch therapy. You can only find group class for stretching in the UK but not in the forms of therapy provided by a therapist in a 1:1 session. There are however numerous courses outside of the UK, & to name a few, Fascial Stretch Therapy(USA), Stretch Therapy(Australia), & of course Functional Stretch Therapy(Singapore).
If you would like to attend a training course & learn methods that you can blend to your current or new practise, add stretching as a modality to improve movement in people, & help them have a pain-free life, read how our programme will be the right fit for you.

What is Functional Stretch Therapy(FST)?

Functional Stretch Therapy is a qualification that results in students who've gone through 8 weeks of training, learning foundation techniques on stretches, physiology, have a strong understanding of how stretching can help improve an individual, & ultimately how the fascia system can be improved. Practitioners can use the title Functional Stretch Therapist upon meeting all requirements to qualifying as one.

Fascial stretch therapy has been compared to Functional Stretch Therapy, & if you do a quick google of Fascial Stretch Therapy VS Functional Stretch Therapy, you will find the article where our graduates are working & blending massage work into their practise of stretch therapy work!

What are the benefits of Functional Stretch Therapy?

Stretch therapy london
Not what you had in mind? Neither did we
There are numerous benefits to having stretch therapy, & the list below is a non-exhaustive one, & they include:
  • Better flow of the lymphatic system
  • Improve sports performance(eg rock climbing, strength training)
  • Improved flexibility(muscles)
  • Improved joint capsule mobility (hip)
  • Improved posture(eg text neck, pelvic tilt, etc)
  • Improved visceral functions
  • Improved hydration & elasticity of fascia
  • Better movement patterns
  • Strength
  • Decreased stress(parasympathetic state)
  • Improve mood
  • Improving blood flow(better recovery)
  • Better sleep
Clients often report feeling lighter & this is because after stretching(even on the first session) the level of tension has decreased via the fascia being more elastic & hydrated.

What is a Stretch practitioner(FST)?

A professional who provides stretch therapy as a service is also referred to as a stretch practitioner, stretch therapist, FST(Functional Stretch Therapist) practitioner.

What does the course teach?

To start with let's be clear that the course is not a massage course by any chance, just stretching science/ knowledge & how you as a functional stretch therapist can start working with people from all backgrounds of fitness levels, & conditions. We don't teach students hundreds of techniques but rather cover a wide spectrum of stretch method during training. We also teach you what flexibility is, current research/ development of fascia so you will always be in the forefront of stretching therapy. Lastly, ensure ample time to practise the stretching techniques on the table before your first client.

What does a Functional Stretch Therapist do?

FST practitioners use a few technique to improve a person's overall posture & being by skillfully applying traction, active/ passive stretches, & feeling for tension in the body through selective movements. During the session, FST practitioenrs are taught to feel how a person can differ in terms of restrictions due to different body types & lifestyle.

How long do you need to stretch to become flexible?

Being flexible is not the only thing to put your goals on as having a functional body & having pain free movement is important in life so that you lower the risk of injury & can also prevent them. Well, it depends on what your lifestyle is & what you do after stretch sessions that will get you to your flexibility & movement goals in a shorter amount of time. Consistency is key.

What is the best time to do stretching exercises?

  • If you are joining classes that have dynamic movements, you do it prior to the session as it prepares your body to have more elasticity & decrease the risk of injury.
  • If you do stretching exercises before classes, avoid static stretches as research has show that it does nothing to help you prepare the body, if anything it increases the chances of injuries during classes.
  • Never stretch your muscles cold as they may cause spasm/ cramps.
  • If unsure ask a fitness professional for advise on what stretching technique is good for a particular activity that you have in mind

What are the pre-requisites for the Functional Stretch Therapy Certificate Course?

The course is open to anyone keen on learning. While there is not pre-requisites for the FST course, most of the students who attend are most in the health & fitness industry which may include:
  • Personal trainers
  • Physiotherapists
  • Sports massage therapists
  • Yoga teacher
  • Rehabilitation specialists

Self-study prior to the course on basic level of anatomy & physiology is not mandatory but nice to know, but not to worry the training will cover materials & method, easy enough for you to follow from basics to advanced concepts of the body. We cover & blend plenty of theory & hands-on practise with personal feedback from the facilitators.
