Personal Trainer Course VS Sports Medicine Certificate Studies

Read to find out as we compare how you can make a better informed choice to choosing a personal trainer certification that is designed to separate you from the rest of the personal trainers.

A personal trainer with a client
  1. Do you want to help coach people to get fit & get results with exercises?
  2. Are you thinking to become a personal trainer in Singapore?
  3. Are you looking for a certified personal trainer (CPT)certification course?
  4. Are you confused to which course is the best personal training course / certification to help you train clients get fit?
If your personal answer is yes to all three questions, well then you’'re already halfway to switching career to the health and fitness industry as a personal trainer, motivating clients to better their health with effective personal training program. There's more to being an instructor trying to keep someone fit with strength training or functional certification course.
There are thousands of certified personal trainers (aka fitness professionals) in the fitness industry in Singapore, with having two sides of the coin from the one that's just doing it on the side on top of their full time job that has nothing to do with fitness or health world, & the other end of fitness professionals who are offering personal training full-time as a career, to help people improve their performance, wellbeing, get fit, & better weight management using resistance training tools to increase fitness.

How to become a successful personal trainer

Success lies in applicable knowledge for personal trainers
See here’s a real problem, to become a certified personal trainer in Singapore is not a regulated profession, which means you are not having to study formally unlike in Australia, or UK where they have trainers association to help regulate fitness  professionals like you who wants to work as a personal trainer to have the best educational requirements & clients will know that you have met standards set by industry’s expectations of holding the title “personal trainer”. In Singapore, there are not many if any practical classes which means you don’t get to learn comprehensive anatomy in a structured way, do tests & exams to see where you are in your development on working with the human body & how you can take someone’s starting point to bring them to their fitness goals, which means you will not know how & where to start. Most of the professional development for fitness education (certifications) are either done online with a weekend live in-person learning group & you receive your certificate at the end of it with a basic test (not a graded exam).

While courses out there are designed for the success of a coach, instructors, or personal trainer, most students still don't receive enough education through these workshop on exercise science & programming that you feel confident enough to start tweaking an athlete’s resistance/ strength training programme, not enough program contact for you as a personal trainer/ instructor to guide clients on their body & what it means to do your exercise prescription, which also means you as a certified personal trainer will not have enough practical knowledge & experience to start writing programs or running one to one sessions to increase muscles & strength, weight or functional training exercises that uses different tools, & that you yourself still have plenty of unanswered questions. The fees for the courses that you may take adds up to to diploma or even a degree in the long run.
Also if you look around Singapore & you may see plenty fitness instructors who are certified in functional or strength training, attending a program such as functional training certification weekend  course / workshop does not entitle you a "rehab trainer" qualification to start seeing clients with pain or dysfunctions as it's outside the scope of practise of a personal trainer in the first place. It takes more than a few hours course to learn the science, variety of assessment & principles.

Don't be silently laughed at, giving yourself such title. Heck, you won’t even know where & how to locate the bicep femoris, or what the importance of the IT band is, how to maximise adenosine triphosphate in training, closed chain, squat mechanics & so much more. You don’t have enough resistance training experience, fitness knowledge or essential experience to start working the very next moment you finish your course, nor are there any offering on work attachments during your course. Fitness & health industry attachments are an effective way to allow you to learn alongside the very best group of personal trainers in Singapore, shadowing them to have a range of strong foundations in programming for personal training, ethics, scope of practice, skills, correct exercise techniques, time management & professionalism.
Picture
While building muscle is not every personal trainer's cup of tea, some trainers wants to ace in special physical training areas such as powerlifting sessions, some nutrition & so on. You have to eventually find an area that you like to focus on as personal training is a very general title, & those who are specialists always get paid more, just think about general medical doctors, & surgeons(we know who gets paid more).
There are several other fitness certification courses & personal trainer programs that extensively covers basic science of nutrition & weight management to advanced functional programming for sports specifics & special populations which are worth looking into. Always look & register for a course that is designed for exercise professionals that are offers, basic to advanced programming, weight/ strength training program, exercise techniques, functional exercise program, health, anatomy & physiology, & those offering extensive assessment & examination with the course certifications process. This is how you know you're signing up for a national or gold standard in the industry. Equally important to know is if the offer of the course or certifications done in local Singapore, online, or just in class lectures, or a hybrid lesson which is essential if you have time constraints if you are making a transition, & lastly what tools would you be provided to ace the exam & studies.

By now, you most probably see the need & how important it is to register for a good certified personal trainer.(CPT) certification course especially if you want to be a recognised trainer or coach under a comprehensive & practical program.

Below are some of the related CPT (certified personal trainer course) courses on fitness training that you can have more information on & make comparison:
  • ACE (american council on exercise)
  • NCSF
  • NASM
  • ISSA
